In English society, solitaire gained popularity thanks to a book called Illustrated Games of Patience, written by Lady Adelaide Cadogan. Solitaire is one of the most popular card games, but do you also know its history? Solitaire has been around since the 18th century, when it first appeared in a written text. Other well-known games are Spider Solitaire, FreeCell, Pyramid Solitaire, Golf Solitaire, Tri Peaks and Forty Thieves. We all know the classic solitaire variant, officially known as Klondike Solitaire, in which you build cards on the tableau according to alternate colors. Our page with solitaire types and families classifies the most common solitaire games according to their type and family. The type of gameplay can also be used to classify solitaire games (builders, packers, non-builders). There are different solitaire game types, depending on whether all cards are visible at the start or not (closed games, half-open games, open games). These are of course all played with one or multiple decks of playing cards, but there are also other commonalities between certain games. Over 500 different solitaire variants exist. We have definitions for the most common terms on our solitaire terminology page. If we shrink that frame of reference to “what we have, where we are, what we’re working with,” I believe there could be a renaissance of sustained success. As much as it pains me, within the current CFB climate we shouldn’t realistically expect to be at the fundamental level of Bama, tOSU, etc. If we define Golden Age as a sincere belief that we could maybe, possibly compete for a natty straight up, then yes. I don’t disagree in one sense, but let’s look at our frame of reference. It’s doable and thankfully Pry is working his ass off to reestablish that identity. That is the pathway to success once again. ![]() We beat Texas in the 1995 Sugar Bowl with a team full of Beamer specials. Let’s be honest, Vick built that program, but we had already proved we could compete at a high level without that lightning in a bottle. The floodgates opened to a decade of high level talent that we wouldn’t have gotten otherwise (DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Jones, Ryan Williams, Tyrod Taylor, etc.) along with the Beamer special of undervalued guys who developed into game changers (Kam Chancellor was a 2* QB coming in, Duane Brown was a 3* TE.) We wound up with possibly the most naturally and uniquely gifted QB in CFB history (bias acknowledged) and that completely changed the program’s stature. It’s important to understand that Mike Vick wasn’t even the top quarterback out of VA the year he came in. He never made it, but there’s a good chance he wouldn’t have anyway. That’s peanuts for guys who are solidly NFL caliber, but he wasn’t. Still, he was making 6 figures while auditioning for the NFL instead of doing it for free. I imagine he only got a small fraction of that though. Spotrac says he made $119,000 from the Packers. Then he was on the Packers practice squad for about 2 months. He signed with the Eagles and got injured and received some injury settlement. If he had waited a year, he may very well have been in the same position but a year older (24 vs 23) and possibly injured. If you need to prove yourself in order to make a team, you can do it for free in college or $11,000/week on a practice squad running NFL style offenses for NFL coaches. ![]() I’m not saying it was the right move, but I don’t think these kinds of decisions are as dumb as they seem, especially if you need the money. And with a better offense/defense balance, does Bud Foster have a better chance of succeeding Frank as HC once Frank does retire? If Tyrod had been able to redshirt like the coaches wanted him to, does he become that much more capable in his later years? Do 20 - already 11-win seasons - become even better? If Marcus Vick doesn’t step on Dumervil’s leg in the Gator Bowl, do his driving infractions that happened around that time result in a suspension instead of a dismissal? Strictly speaking, they did not pertain to the liturgical year, but rather to the sanctification of civil life, and so they correspond explicitly even to the demands of modern times. Blessed Ildefonso Schuster in The Sacramentary: Historical and Liturgical Notes on the Roman Missal: Their roots go back to the Old Testament. And: “ideo ipsa continentiae observantia quattuor est assignata temporibus, ut in idipsum totius anni redeunte decursu, cognosceremus nos indesinenter purificationibus indigere.” “Et traditio decrevit, et consuetudo formavit” – said the “most liturgical” Pope. We learn from the sermons of Leo the Great how devotedly the Roman church kept this observance in the 5th century. These Ember weeks.were spaced three months apart, in the summer, in autumn and in winter.Laszlo Dobszay in The Restoration and Organic Development of the Roman Rite: This vigil service continued far into the night. And then on Saturday evening a vigil was held in much the same way as the Easter vigil, with twelve lessons and with corresponding songs and prayers. Wednesday and Friday were kept as days of fast, with the fasting continuing on Saturday. during the months of June, September and December one week was especially devoted to prayer and fasting. ![]() Three times a year a sort of retreat period was held. We say quattuor tempora, but the most ancient sources of the Roman liturgy speak only of three such times. These are among the most ancient institutions of the Roman liturgy. ![]() They appear at first to have had no fixed date, and the Pope announced their celebration some time in advance.Josef Jungmann in The Early Liturgy to the time of Gregory the Great: Quattuor Tempora or Ember Days, were local institutions of the Church of Rome in the 5th century. Some of these lessons contain promises of a bountiful harvest for those that serve God.Īrchdale King in The Liturgy of the Roman Church: The present Roman Missal, in the formulary for the Ember days, retains in part the old practice of lessons from Scripture in addition to the ordinary two: for the Wednesdays three, for the Saturdays six, and seven for the Saturday in December. Spain adopted them with the Roman Liturgy in the eleventh century. Augustine into Gaul and Germany by the Carlovingians. Before Gelasius the ember days were known only in Rome, but after his time their observance spread. This pope also permitted the conferring of priesthood and deaconship on the Saturdays of ember week-these were formerly given only at Easter. When the fourth season was added cannot be ascertained, but Gelasius (492-496) speaks of all four. Leo the Great (440-461) considers it an Apostolic institution. The "Liber Pontificalis" ascribes to Pope Callistus (217-222) a law ordering the fast, but probably it is older. At first the Church in Rome had fasts in June, September, and December the exact days were not fixed but were announced by the priests. ![]() The Church, when converting heathen nations, has always tried to sanctify any practices which could be utilized for a good purpose. At the beginning of the time for seeding and harvesting religious ceremonies were performed to implore the help of their deities: in June for a bountiful harvest, in September for a rich vintage, and in December for the seeding. The Romans were originally given to agriculture, and their native gods belonged to the same class. The immediate occasion was the practice of the heathens of Rome. The Catholic Encyclopedia further considers their origins: The ember days occur at the beginning of the seasons and their purpose "was to thank God for the gifts of nature, to teach men to make use of them in moderation, and to assist the needy." (Catholic Encyclopedia). These days are attached to the different natural seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter and are days of fast and abstinence. What are ember days? At four periods of the year, the traditional liturgical calendar of the Church marks ember days. The changing of the seasons, perhaps especially the entry into Autumn, bring to mind many things. ![]() |
